Chantelle Cancel, BS, MEd, is a second-year medical student at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso with aspirations to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery. Her academic and research interests include musculoskeletal oncology, mental health, and the intersection of cultural and global health disparities. She is currently engaged in research exploring the association between pathological fractures and emerging mental health diagnoses, aiming to improve multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.
Her interest in orthopedic surgery stems from a desire to combine technical precision with meaningful, long-term impacts on patients’ quality of life. She is particularly drawn to the field’s capacity to restore mobility, function, and independence, as well as the opportunities it provides for research and innovation in surgical techniques and musculoskeletal health.
In addition to her research, Chantelle Cancel serves as the Vice President of her class, an admissions ambassador, and an alternate delegate for her school's American Medical Association chapter. She has actively participated in mentorship and initiatives that address healthcare access and equity, experiences that have strengthened her commitment to advancing and advocating for culturally competent care both locally and globally. Outside of academics, she enjoys weightlifting and running, hobbies that strengthen her discipline and resilience while providing balance to her personal and professional pursuits.
