Chief of the Experimental Oncology Lab
Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli
Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Katia Scotlandi leads the Experimental Oncology Lab and co- coordinates the Oncology Research Line at the Rizzoli Institute, Italy. She chairs the musculoskeletal tumors working group within the Italian Alliance against Cancer and coordinates preclinical research in the international FOSTER and EuroEwing consortia. Her research focuses on bone sarcomas, with major contributions to advancing personalized therapies for Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma, and to accelerating the translation of promising targeted drugs into clinical trials.
Since 2016, she has developed complex experimental models for bone sarcomas, including PDXs, PDX-derived cell lines, 3D bioprinted models, and tumoroids. These tools provide more faithful insights into tumor- and patient-specific drug sensitivities compared to standard cell lines. In 2019, she also assumed leadership of the Rizzoli Institute’s NGS sequencing facility. By integrating genomic characterization of patient tumors with experimental models, her team generates powerful resources to uncover specific drug vulnerabilities.
Katia Scotlandi is author of over 290 scientific publications (Orcid: 0000-0001-6114-9499; Scopus H-index: 60), Adjunct Professor at the University of Bologna and has mentored over seventy PhD and undergraduate students, contributing to both scientific progress and researcher training.
