Col Susan Whiteway, USAF, MC is the current Deputy Director at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology physician. In her role as AFRRI Deputy Director, Col Whiteway leverages her clinical background to serve as subject matter expert in radiation medical countermeasures, instructor for the medical effects of ionizing radiation course, and subject matter expert for the Defense Science Board, Special Operations Command leadership, training, and education working group, Joint Requirement Office, Defense Health Agency, and other inter-agency partners to foster radiation medical countermeasure research/development in support of the warfighter.
Prior to her current assignment, Col Whiteway served in numerous academic medicine positions within the Military Health System (MHS). From 2012 to 2020, she served as Core Faculty and Associate Program Director, General Pediatric Residency Program, San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium. From 2020 to 2023, she served as Pediatric Hematology Oncology Fellowship Program Director, and Air Force Assistant Chief for Graduate Medical Education, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, National Capital Consortium.
Col Whiteway specializes in the clinical care of the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) oncology patients. She is a member of the AYA Oncology Discipline Committee and Bone Tumor Committee, Children’s Oncology Group. Col Whiteway provides ongoing support to Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences as Associate Professor of Pediatrics and to the greater Air Force as the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General.
