Joshua Dessenberger is a second-year medical student at the University of Kansas School of Medicine with interests in orthopedic surgery and surgical oncology. Prior to medical school, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry, summa cum laude, from Newman University.
At KUMC, Joshua is involved in the Medical Student Assembly (MSA), Kern National Network (KNN), and the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR). He serves on the Academic Professionalism Committee with faculty members from KUMC and serves as the Director of Community Engagement, while leading the Community Service Committee for MSA. Their current research under the mentorship of Dr. Luke V. Selby, MD, MS, FACS explores wound complications after ultra-hypofractionated neoadjuvant radiation for soft tissue sarcoma. He is concurrently working with Dr. Lyndsey J. Kilgore, MD, FACS on a surgical education project introducing surgical events to first-year medical students between the three campuses at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Outside of academia, Joshua enjoys volunteering at JayDoc, the medical school's free clinic, and The Lord's Diner, a local food pantry/kitchen. He plans to pursue a career in surgery with an emphasis on community medicine and medical education.
