Patrick Leavey, M.D. is a Professor of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center and a Pediatric Oncologist at Children’s Health in Dallas and Plano. He earned his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1986, followed by clinical training in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in Ireland and Western Australia. In 1992, he completed a pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship at The Children’s Hospital Denver and the University of Colorado.
Dr. Leavey conducted four years of research in Dr. Daniel Ambruso’s lab, focusing on granulocyte function and neutrophil cytosolic proteins. He holds a Doctorate in Medicine from the National University of Ireland and is board certified in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. He is also a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and a Diplomate of Child Health.
Since joining UT Southwestern in 1998, Dr. Leavey has held numerous leadership roles, including Associate Vice Chair for Research Operations in Pediatrics and Associate Director for Clinical Research at the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is the Immediate Past President of the Medical/Dental Staff at Children’s Medical Center Dallas and a former President of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
Dr. Leavey contributes to national research efforts as co-chair of the Children’s Oncology Group study AOST2031, co-investigator on a CPRIT-funded rhabdomyosarcoma imaging project, and principal investigator for a Team Connor Foundation study on machine learning in osteosarcoma. He also leads the North Texas Sickle Cell Disease Clinical Trial Unit and serves on advisory boards for the Children’s Cancer Fund and The Clayton Dabney Foundation.
