Medical Oncologist, Clinical and Research Fellow
Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada
Dr. Carlos Diego H. Lopes is a Clinical and Research Fellow in Medical Oncology at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, University Health Network (UHN), with clinical focus in the Phase I Drug Development, Sarcoma, and Melanoma Programs. His research integrates translational oncology, biomarker discovery, and real-world data analytics to improve precision cancer therapy, particularly in rare and immunotherapy-resistant malignancies.
Dr. Lopes leads and collaborates on several national and international projects within the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network (MOHCCN) and the Canadian Sarcoma Research & Clinical Collaboration (CanSaRCC). His work focuses on genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenomic characterization of tumor and liquid biopsy samples, including the use of cell-free active chromatin (cfDNAac), tumor purity estimation by sWGS and AI-digital pathology, and multi-omics integration for patient stratification.
He is the principal investigator or co-investigator in multiple ongoing translational initiatives, including studies on cfDNAac-based biomarkers in metastatic leiomyosarcoma, intratumoral microbiome profiling in melanoma, and circulating tumor DNA-guided adjuvant therapy trials in soft tissue sarcoma.
His long-term goal is to advance precision oncology approaches in sarcoma and melanoma, bridging molecular research and clinical care to develop biomarker-driven treatment strategies.
